Day 4 to 5 - Online Organization

Day 4

Why did the computer get glasses?

Typing Club - Touch Typing
  • If you have not done so already, Sign Up for Typing Club
    1. Go to TypingClub.com and click Get Started
    2. Click Save Progress in upper right-hand corner of screen
    3. Fill in the information and click Sign Up
      • username = first initial, last initial, ID number
      • password = capital First initial, lowercase last initial, #,  locker combo (birth date in summer)
    4. Click Start
    5. Click Lesson 1 to watch Introduction video
  • As you proceed through the lessons, focus on technique. Don't try to type fast... try to train your brain to learn where the keys are without looking.
  • View the video on proper touch typing technique and create a list of typing tips in a Google Doc.
  • Complete daily practice in Typing Club using proper technique (remember to focus on how you type, not how well). Work on one lesson for 5 to 10 minutes repeatedly, each day:

    • Arrow through the first three messages
      • You are about to enter the world of Ignition where you will learn new skills for using technology in productive, creative, and responsible ways.
      • Use these skills to help yourself and other people in your world make good decisions about technology
      • Complete all three activities and you will be on your way!

    • put on your headphones and click the Welcome rectangle
    • watch the Introduction Video
      • you will be introduced to Ignition where you will learn to use technology in productive, creative, and responsible ways
      • this is only a simulation, you will not really get your favorite band to come to Leyden
    • after first video, Click on the forward arrow to continue
    • click on the Choosing a Computer rectangle
    • turn the volume down for your headphones
    • take Digital Preparedness Survey
    • click on the Choosing a Computer rectangle
    • read the screen and click the X
    • click the Pre-Check balloon
    • after video, Click on the forward arrow to continue

    Day 5
    Google Calendar

    Using the Calendar to not only track academic due dates but also manage personal tasks and responsibilities

    Tasks:

    1. As you work through this module, complete the Google Calendar worksheet and submit it.
    2. In order to become an effective and organized student, it is imperative to learn how to read and use the Google Calendar. Watch this video for an introduction to the Google Calendar.
    3. Review your course calendars for important events and due dates.
    4. Create a personal Google calendar and add events. Include items such as class schedule, sporting events, club meetings, your birthday or other important life events.
    5. Watch this video on adding events to your calendar and add one or more Leyden calendar events to your calendar.

    1. Be Present

    3. Be Prepared to learn with fully charged chromebook, pens, pencils, and paper
    4. Be Productive (don't wander the Internet or use your phone)

    Day 2

    Google Drive
    Using folders and file naming conventions will help one stay organized online and will help increase one's overall productivity.
    Tasks:
    • As you go through this module, complete the Gooogle Drive worksheet. (you'll need to make a copy of it)
    • As an introduction to Google Drive watch the Google Drive 2017 Tutorial - Quick Start video tutorial and take notes as you watch (don't try to write down everything... just the key points).
    • Watch the Create a Google Doc 2017 video tutorial and take notes.
    • To maintain consistency throughout the class and to allow you to find your own files more quickly, we will all use the same file folder structure in our Google Drives. Add the following sub-folders to your Digital Literacy folder on your Google Drive:
      • 01 Online Organization
      • 02 Digital Footprint
      • 03 Presentations
      • 04 College Career Readiness
      • 05 Computer Science
    • Then you need to "make a copy", rename, edit, share with anyone that has the link, and submit the Student Bio Doc Assignment using the Assignment Submission Form (never share or email a document to me; use the submission form)
    • Turn in the Google Drive Worksheet
    • Working collaboratively (in groups) is becoming more and more important in our society. To help you practice collaborative learning you need to:
      • Create a "private", shared document with several classmates that highlights all the Digital Literacy Topics that you've learned so far. When you are finished, use the Submission form to "turn in" your assignment.
